New Era of Nutrigenomics – A knowledge guide for Beginners

 

Nutrition plays a predominant and recognizable role in health management and “Nutrigenomics is the study of effects of nutrition, nourishment or lack of nutrition on the genetic expression as well as the influence of genetic variation on nutrition.

 

Nutrigenomics is the area of nutrition that uses molecular tools to search, access, and understand the several responses obtained through a certain diet applied between individuals or population groups. It seeks to elucidate how the components of a particular diet may affect the expression of genes. This response depends on how genes will show a changed activity or alter gene expression & the potential for modifications of food or diet to support health and reduce the risk of diet-related diseases.

 

For example, Lactose intolerance, majority of adults in the world are lactose intolerant, Gluten sensitivity (gluten is the general name given to proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale), Caffeine sensitivity (chemical that is found in a wide variety of beverages, including coffee, soda, tea and energy drinks).

The concept that diet influences genetics & health is an ancient one. It’s very easy to make good-tasting food. Put some lard or butter in it, and it’s going to taste good. The challenge is how to take the fat out and create healthfully but also good-tasting food. An adequate and proper amount of nutrients prevent us from developing chronic diseases. The nutrients should keep the desired balance between total oxidation status and total antioxidant response of the genome to maintain a balanced level between these two variables. If this balance is disturbed by our eating habits, our genomic system may become prone to the development of chronic diseases.
