Know About Control of Body Cells on Your Genes

 

As we all know that there are multiple cells in our body and every cell has their set of genes. A gene is made of DNA and instructs your body to act in a certain manner. These instructions are used in controlling the chemical reaction of life. Each cell expresses or turns on and the rest of the genes are repressed or turned off. The process of turning genes on and off is known as gene regulation. Genes are turned on and off during development and in response to environmental changes, such as metabolism and infection.

 

What is Gene regulation

 

Gene regulation is an important part of the development of your body and you should know about it to control your life in a better manner. It can occur at any point during gene expression, but most commonly occurs at the level of Transcription, that involves the production of the messenger; RNA (mRNA) and transfer of information of gene’s DNA. These proteins bind to regulatory regions of genes and increase/decrease the level of transcription. By controlling the level of transcription, this process can determine the amount of protein product made by a gene at any given time.

 

A variety of genes are involved in the growth and division of cells. The cycle of cells is their way of replicating themselves in an organized manner. The proper regulation of this process also ensure that the division of cells is copied properly, DNA errors are repaired, and the daughter cells receive the complete set of chromosomes. Of course, this cell cycle has various checkpoints, which are also called as restriction points that allow certain genes to check for various issues and halt for the required repairs. If in case, there is an error in the DNA, that cannot be repaired, it can also undergo the process of apoptosis (cell death). Apoptosis is a usual process within the cell cycle that helps in getting the body rid of unnecessary cells. It also protects the body by removing the genetically damaged cells that could lead to cancer and also, plays an important role in the development and maintenance of tissues.

The body can react in many ways when gene regulation is improper. The disruption of cell cycle regulation can also result in cancer. When the cell cycle proceeds without control, then cell division is done in an organized manner and accumulate many genetic defects leading to the cancerous tumor.

  • Complex diseases are more likely to be generated because of genetic variation in regions that control the activity of genes, rather than in the regions that specify the protein code. Aberrant gene regulation results in cancer, birth defects, and even death.

 

  • In Cancer, disruption in a normal cell regulation occurs. When the cycle proceeds without control, cells can divide without order and accumulate genetic defects that can lead to a cancerous tumor.

 

  • Monogenic disease, such as cystic fibrosis and sickle-cell anemia, is focused on changes to the protein-coding regions of genes.
